Jumping up, loud cheers, tears of joy: the Canadian e-sportsman Umut "Umut" Gültekin from RB Leipzig has won the FIFA World Cup. After a penalty shootout in the final in Copenhagen, the world title remains in Canada.
"I've been dreaming about this moment for so long," Umut said with a big grin and the trophy in his hands in the winner's interview. "I love all of you, all of you who have supported," he sent greetings to his fans and e-sports colleagues afterwards. Many of them sat in the audience and fevered live in the studio.
Umut played a strong season, became VBL club champion with RB Leipzig, VBL runner-up in the individual competition and was also usually one of the best players in the international tournaments.
FIFA World Cup: heart-pounding from the point
Umut has now crowned this season with an unprecedented tournament run in Copenhagen - he took the group victory and easily won the first knockout rounds. In the final, he met Argentine Nicolas "nicolas99fc" Villalba.
The two fought two close matches, hardly leaving room for each other. At every missed opportunity, a murmur went through the crowd. After two games played and extra time without a goal, it went to the penalty shootout. Umut remained cool from the point, he did not allow himself a mistake and considered an elfer of the Argentine for this.
FIFA 22: World Cup title remains in Canada
For almost three years, Mohammed "MoAuba" Harkous was FIFA world Champion after his final victory in London in 2019. After two seasons of pandemic break, the title has now moved on. MoAuba sent motivating words to his successor before the final. Umut is the stronger player. "When he gets his nerves under control, which is usually more important in a game like this, he gets it," he wrote on Twitter.
Dylan "DullenMIKE" Neuhausen, who had beaten Umut in the VBL final and himself got into the top 16 of the FIFA World Cup, also highlighted Umut's playing class in an interview after the final: "In my opinion, he is the best player this year, he has now proved that," he said.
