Landing successfully, despite turbulence: London Spitfire has held its own on the first weekend of the Countdown Cup with two close victories against Paris Eternal and Vancouver Titans. Now there are good chances of qualifying for the playoffs of this year's Overwatch League.
"We've worked on pretty much every composition," Hadi "Hadi" Bleinagel said in an interview after the match against Vancouver Titans. The intense training followed after Florida Mayhem spectacularly turned a game against London in the summer tournament. "We are confident that we can really play everything - against whoever we are going to play and what they will play.»
Overwatch Leage: Fight to the last meter
In contrast to self-confidence, there is a bumpy performance. London opened the game against Paris with a narrow 1:0. Two cards followed with heated extensions; the second secured Paris. Only then did the British team finish the shaky match, also after an extended extension.
The next day, the effort seemed to be drawing on London. The team lost the first card to Vancouver Titans, but they then bit their way to a 2-1 lead. On the final card, Vancouver were just under two metres apart for an equaliser - but London fended off the point and took their second win of the week.
Playoff entry is within reach for London
This puts London Spitfire in fifth place. If the team holds the position, it automatically qualifies for the playoffs. It would be London's first playoff appearance since 2019.
