Natus Vincere competed in the final of the PGL Major with 2:0 (16:11; 22:19) prevailed against G2 Esports and thus won the most important counter-strike tournament of the year. For superstar Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliv it is the first triumph at a major tournament.
"I said to myself: I'll stay with Navi, and win the major with the team. I promised myself, and we kept it," s1mple said in the interview after the game. "A lot of people didn't believe in it, and made jokes about it, but we still managed to do it.»
Map selection of G2 Esports goes to Navi
Navi had marched through the preliminary round and the playoffs without surrendering a single card. Also for Team Vitality and Gambit Esports this was in the unofficial world ranking of "HLTV.org " since July, the first-place team has always been too strong.
G2 was able to confidently throw ninjas in pajamas out of the tournament at first, but moved into the final in the semifinals against Heroic only after an extension on the third card.
Already on the first map of the final, both teams fought a close battle. The game remained even until the second half, but a short run was enough for Navi to break away and take G2's own choice of cards.
The Counter-Strike Major
On the second card, G2 showed itself much stronger and secured five match points after a strong half. Actually, the team was on the verge of equalizing, but Navi still caught up with the gap and forced the extension.
Bitter for G2: At 15:13, star player Nikola "NiKo" Kovac had sneaked unnoticed behind the backs of the opponents, but did not hit a single shot and lost the round.
Navi took the momentum from the catch-up into extra time, and only needed one more round to win the tournament. G2 fought back and forced a second extension, but the defensive attempts were unsuccessful there. In the fourth major final of the organization, the title thus went to Navi for the first time.
Majors are considered CS:GO World Championship
With the run through the tournament, Navi is making history: for the first time, a team could win a major title without surrendering a single card during the tournament.
There are usually two counter-strike majors per year. Because the best teams from all over the world travel there, the tournaments are equivalent to a World Championship. Due to the corona pandemic, the last major took place over two years ago in Berlin.
