The Overwatch League has announced the start of the next season for May 5. The first games are also fixed: in the West region, New York Excelsior plays against Los Angeles Gladiators, while in the East region Philadelphia Fusion meets champion Shanghai Dragons.
"It's going to be the best season so far," League boss Sean Miller announced in a Youtube video and then presented the plans for the current year. As in 2021, a total of four tournaments will take place, two of which will be exclusively regional.
Eight teams from the Western region and four from the Eastern region can qualify for each tournament. The league points are decisive for this, the distribution of which has also been revised. Depending on the development of the corona pandemic, local events are also possible.
It is not clear from the announcement whether the tournament will be contested with the long-announced Overwatch 2. However, on Twitter, Miller made a reference to the successor of the game, in which one player is needed less per team.
