Team Heretics has won the League of Legends European Masters tournament. In a closely fought final, the Spanish runner-up beat Team BDS Academy with a score of 3:2.
Heretics thus finished the last year as a regional league player before moving to the LEC with a great success. "We always felt we performed well against LFL teams in training. But I told our coaches, it's just practice games," Heretics jungler Subicz "bluerzor" Dániel said in an interview after the game. "We had to improve a lot, and we did that day after day.»
Heretics surprises BDS with Ex-Worlds participant
Actually not a favorite, Heretics had previously eliminated the last German representative Unicorns of Love: Sexy Edition and the French champion Team LDLC in the playoffs.
There was a lot of experience at BDS: Adam "Adam" Manaane played for Fnatic at the World Championship last year, Canadian midlaner Steven "Reeker" Chen played for MAD Lions in the last split in the LEC.
But Heretics proved to be the stronger team in a back-and-forth final. After a 2-0 lead, BDS came back and forced a fifth game, which Heretics narrowly won. The organization will take over the LEC place of Misfits Gaming as European champion next year.
EU Masters: Spain trumps strong French
Heretics' victory in the final is also a triumph for the Spanish Superleague. The French LFL has dominated in recent splits, with defending champion and three-time champion Karmine Corp missing out on qualifying this time. Also in this split, the league placed four of eight teams in the playoffs, while Heretics was the only Spanish team to make it out of the group stage.
