DRX has prevailed in the quarterfinals of the League of Legends World Championship against the world champion Edward Gaming in a highly exciting series. Previously, two other Korean teams, T1 and Gen.G, had already won.
"I'm so happy," DRX's Kim "Deft" Hyuk-kyu said in tears, according to a translation after the series against Edward Gaming. "Even though we lost two games, I was pretty sure we could still beat them." For the 26-year-old Korean, the victory means the first World Cup semi-final since 2014.
DRX makes comeback against World Champion EDG
As an outsider, DRX went into the best-of-five against the world champion from China as a play-ins team. After the opening defeat, DRX had game two in hand, but missed the chance to equalize.
But then the team managed the surprise: with three victories in a row, DRX completed the "reverse sweep" and won the series for itself. This means that DRX is not only in the semi-finals, but also denies world champion EDG the chance to defend his title.
In the all-Korean quarterfinal between Damwon Kia and the LCK champion Gen.G, Damwon was denied the "reverse sweep". The team fought back from a 2-0 deficit, but then lost to Gen.G in the decisive fifth game.
LoL World Cup: Three Korean teams in the semifinals
The series of T1 against Royal Never Give Up (RNG) from China was much clearer: the team led by LoL star Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok swept the Chinese representative out of the tournament in just three games. In the semifinals, T1 will now face the last Chinese team JD Gaming, which had defeated LEC champion Rogue. In the second encounter, DRX and Gen.G fight for entry into the final of the LoL Worlds.
