The Worlds fairytale is perfect: DRX from South Korea has won his first world title in League of Legends in a competitive final series. Against T1 around superstar Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok, DRX decided the final match with a score of 3:2.
"I'm really overwhelmed at the moment," Kim "Deft" Hyuk-kyu said in tears after the series, according to a translation. "Every night since my debut, I've dreamed of winning the World Cup. It was always just a dream, but now I've done it.»
The way to the final of the Worlds could not be more different for the teams. DRX entered the tournament only as the fourth best team from Korea. After first place in Group C, DRX surprisingly managed to turn the series against defending champion Edward Gaming from China from a 0: 2 gap in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, DRX clearly defeated the champion of the Korean league Gen.G with a score of 3:1.

T1 dominated his group and knocked out the title holder of the Mid-Season Invitational, RNG of China, from the tournament in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, JDG was the last Chinese team to fall.
For T1 it was the first World Cup final since 2017, for DRX the first ever. Despite the remarkable course of the tournament, DRX was considered an outsider in the final series for many.
At the start of the series, T1 directly confirmed his favorite role and won the game in a dominant way. T1 continued the momentum in the following game. DRX fought back and equalized the series in the longest game of the tournament after 45 minutes.
First World Championship title for DRX and Deft
T1 then went back into the lead and stood in front of the match point. However, DRX denied this with a strong performance and equalized the series again. This meant that the final went the full length, as it did last year.
The tension of the teams was noticeable in the decisive game - T1 held a lead, but DRX did not let up. In a highly exciting race for the opponent's base, DRX finally kept his nerve and rewarded himself with the world champion title after an impressive run through the tournament.
In front of around 20,000 spectators at the Chase Center in San Francisco, the team from South Korea was allowed to hold the newly designed World Cup Trophy in their hands for the first time.
