The second "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" major of the year starts in Brazil on Monday. The four German organizations that have qualified via "Road to Rio" will start the tournament with different signs.
By far the best result so far was secured by the still young line-up of Sprout, which earned legendary status as one of the best eight teams in the qualifier. The organization starts in the Challenger phase. This means that she has already secured the best major ranking ever before the tournament, which easily surpasses the first round in the only participation so far more than five years ago.
Despite legend status: Sprout not a favorite in IEM Rio
The fact that things are already going so well is no surprise to Victor "Staehr" Staehr. "We have the right players for this, and we just had to show what we can do," says the Sprout talent in an interview with the German Press Agency.
In the major, which is already played in front of an audience in the group phases, there is a bigger challenge waiting for you again. "Of course, it's no secret that we are not the favorites for a good run," says the 18-year-old. "But we are much better offline and can easily provide surprises in best-of-ones. We can make it far.»
Gamerlegion wants to gain experience in CS:GO-Major
For the first time at a major, Team Gamerlegion is present. The goal of qualifying for the next tournament in Paris clearly exceeded the line-up in the "Road to Rio" that had been formed only a short time before: the team almost beat defending champion FaZe and later eliminated a heavyweight with G2 Esports. "The first game was a yardstick, which we mastered relatively confidently. From then on, the dream gradually became a reality," says manager Julian Miculcy about the attitude of his team.
Although the Berlin organization is an outsider in the Major, it still wants to take a lot with it there. "Of course we want to give everything to get as far as possible, but I see this more as a huge experience for the team," says Miculcy. "We are quite capable of getting some teams into the breach and also making it to the next stage.»
Major playoffs still a long way off for BIG and Mouz
BIG and Mouz also managed to qualify for the major again at the last minute. Mouz enters the tournament with a lot of potential, but still little experience, after the promotion of a third Academy player in a year.
Due to illness, BIG has to compete with Academy player Elias "s1n" Stein, as already in the qualifier, but manager Christian Lenz holds big pieces. "He's ultra relaxed and doing his thing," he said on his Twitch channel. "He went from 0 to 100 in there and he did well for that.»
